How does my air conditioning unit cool my home?

The Split System air conditioning is the most common type of system installed in many house holds today. As the name suggests, a split system is divided into two working parts. To keep things simple, the parts are “outdoor unit” and “indoor unit”. The outdoor unit is a condenser that releases refrigerant (a substance that removes heat from the air) into its cooling circuit that attaches to the air. Once passing through the condenser, the refrigerant and air mixture turns into condensation resulting in water that drips outside. While the process is on its way, cold air is released into the “indoor unit” where it is distributed in its respective room for its users to enjoy.

How does my air conditioning unit heat up my home?

So how does the outdoor unit bring the hot air into my space? The same system you use to cool down your space can also be used to heat it up! Air conditioning systems are equipped with heat pump systems that can reverse the flow of air. That means instead of blowing cold air into your space and hot air outside, your system can now blow the hot air into your space while throwing your cold air outside on those hot summer days.

Why are there sizes in Split System Air Conditioning units?

Different spaces require different levels of output. Simply put, a bigger area will need more power to cool or heat than it would for a smaller unit to do the same job. Units are normally measured in terms of the amount of energy they use. Energy here is kW, or Kilowatts (1,000 watts). A larger unit will hold a larger energy number that represents its cooling capability. For example, a large Split System is somewhere around the 8-9kW range, whereas a small unit floats around the 2kW range.
